Mi’kmaq History Month
Treaty Day, (October 1st) marks the beginning of Mi'kmaq History Month in Nova Scotia as proclaimed in 1993 by then Premier John Savage and Mi’kmaq Grand Chief Ben Sylliboy.
Its purpose is to promote public awareness about the Mi’kmaw culture and heritage for all citizens of Nova Scotia. A poster is produced and numerous events are organized throughout the month in recognition of Mi’kmaq History Month.

'The Mi'kmaq of Nova Scotia: Where We've Been and Where We're Going' Wednesday, October 28 Nova Scotia Community College - Truro Campus 12 - 1:30 p.m. or Thursday, October 29 Art Gallery of Nova Scotia - Windsor Fountain Lecture Theatre 12 - 1:30 p.m. RSVP abor_off@gov.ns.ca ) Featuring guest speakers Dan Christmas, Senior Advisor, Membertou First Nation and Danny Graham, Chief Negotiator, Made-In-Nova Scotia Negotiations Process, Province of Nova Scotia Focus: The Mi'kmaq, federal and provincial governments are involved in a process that will fundamentally realign the relationship between these three levels of government. The presentation speaks to why this is happening and where it is going. It examines the potential implications of how this process and its outcomes will affect Nova Scotia businesses and institutions. It also explores the Mi’kmaq's important contribution to the Province’s history, culture and economy. |

Video Screening Several other History Month events will take place throughout October including the launch of a Wabanaki: People of the Dawn learning guide and video screening at Citadel High, among others. |

Cultural Awareness E-learning We also encourage Nova Scotia public servants to sign up for Public Service Commission's Online Aboriginal Cultural Awareness Program (https://learnnet.gov.ns.ca). The content of the program helps build awareness of Mi’kmaq culture and history. It is an online program that provides an alternative approach to learning. Mi’kmaq artist David Joseph (DJ) Brooks show in Kennetcook The paintings and sculptures of Nova Scotian Mi’kmaq artist David Joseph (DJ) Brooks will be featured in a solo art exhibit this weekend in Kennetcook, Hants County. A collection of Brooks’ works can be seen at: The Place Near and Far Gallery, 6235 Highway # 354, in Kennetcook, (where Hwy #354 intersects with Hwy #236) Friday October 23rd from 7:00 - 9:00 pm The Gallery will be open Saturday October 24th from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and then again on Sunday October 25th from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. |
