Farm Safety: Standards of Practice for Farms in Nova Scotia
Risk Management Tool

This Risk management tool is intended to assist you in managingsafety issues on your farm. It has been designed to enable farm managers to monitor key safety issures on a monthly or bi-monthly basis. The categories covered on the check list supplied with the tool are common to most farm businesses;however, you can use the blank section at the end of the list to monitor any areas of your work place that are not specifically listed,or areas that may be of special concern to you and your employees.

Instructions for using Risk Management Worksheets

1. Read the Standards of Practice for Farms in Nova Scotia manual carefully; this will assistyou in understanding your responsibilities with respect to Nova Scotia's Occupational Health & SafetyLegislation. It will also assist you with identifying the safety issues you must successfully manage on your farm.

2. Identify the sections on the check lists that apply to your farm operation and complete the blank sections to deal withadditional areas of concern or areas that may not be specifically identified on the check lists.

3. Complete all the sections of the check list that are relevant to your farm on a regular basis (monthly or bi-monthly)by: 1) checking off that you have performed any tasks noted on the check lists and/or have met any standards or criteria noted onthe check lists; 2) noting any deficiencies and the remedial actions taken to correct them.

4. Date the check list and store in safe place for future reference.
