Nova Scotia Municipal Electricity Cooperative
The Municipal Electric Utilities of Nova Scotia Cooperative Limited was established in late 1997.
Each of these six utilities is an independent supplier of electric energy within its specific territory and owns and operates its own distribution system.
Until recently, the utilities had to purchase power from Nova Scotia Power Inc.
But since the provincial government opened the wholesale market on February 1, 2007, the utilities are now able to purchase power from other suppliers.
The Municipal Electric Utilities make up approximately 2% of the electrical load in Nova Scotia.
The six independent utilities are:
- Town of Antigonish
- Berwick Electric Commission
- Town of Canso
- Town of Lunenburg
- Town of Mahone Bay
- Riverport Electric Light Commissioners
