Wait Time

The Road to Faster Care

Improving access to health care and addressing wait times is important to Nova Scotians and it's a priority for the province. Wait times are complex, and a comprehensive approach to making improvements is critical. The Department of Health is working with our partners to take action on a number of fronts.

Under our plan, we've spent over $100-million dollars to add important new health care equipment across the province. We're putting new technology on the ground to save time and find efficiencies. We're streamlining processes and procedures. And we're training and recruiting more health care providers, as well as giving them the support they need to focus on patients.

There is more to do, but we are seeing successes. Today, twice as many patients can get bone density scans, MRIs, and mammography screenings. The province's first PET scanner has been opened and we've made the first federal wait time guarantee in the country. We have the best breast screening rate in Canada, and we've launched important projects to reduce wait times for surgery and other diagnostic tests.

Nova Scotians can help by using the information provided here to decide if they would like to travel outside their communities to a location where the wait is shorter. And if we all work together to help our families lead vibrant lives, we'll soon find we live in healthier communities.
