Growing the economy through innovation
- Productivity Investment Program (PIP)
Nova Scotia's new Productivity Investment Program will help companies improve their employees' skills and purchase advanced equipment in order to become more competitive. This investment in people and equipment creates a more competitive province which is essential to growing our economy. This program includes two incentives:
- LED Roadway Lighting Ltd. Loan Guarantee
The province is making the future of energy-efficient street lighting brighter by supporting an innovative Nova Scotia-based technology firm. The province will provide LED Roadway Lighting Ltd. with a $10-million loan guarantee from the Industrial Expansion Fund.
- Province Sponsors Atlantic Youth Gathering
The province is supporting young entrepreneurs through an investment in the Atlantic Canada Youth Entrepreneurship Summit. The province invested $30,000 in the summit. Fostering a culture of innovative entrepreneurship will help lead to long-term skill development and economic growth across Atlantic Canada.
- Temporary Foreign Worker Program
The province has signed an agreement with the federal government that provides Nova Scotia with a greater role in helping employers bring temporary foreign workers to the province. This Temporary Foreign Worker Program allows Nova Scotian to be able to respond faster to the needs of employers. Temporary international workers have technical skills and international contacts our companies and communities need to remain innovative, productive and competitive.
- New Science and Technology Advisory Council
Early stage technology companies in the province are getting improved access to scientific and technology expertise thanks to Innovacorp's new Science and Technology Advisory Council. The council will be a great platform for assessing emerging science and technology issues important to Nova Scotia's economic future.
- Province invests in hands-on science centre for youth
The province is helping to support innovation and hands-on learning by providing $700,000 in support for the Discovery Centre. It’s an excellent example of innovation and learning – key aspects of jobsHere, our plan to grow the economy. This investment ensures that the Discovery Centre continues to promote science and inspire the minds of future generations.
- Provincial Invests $2-million to Bring Fibre-optic TV and Internet Technology to Halifax
The province’s $2-million investment with Bell Aliant will bring fibre-optic television and Internet access to 160,000 homes and business in HRM. The money will make sure that the province will have the right telecommunications infrastructure in place to compete in the global economy. In May 2010, an additional $2-million was invested to bring fibre-optic technology to the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. More than half of these investments will be spent on jobs and services.
- Agriculture Plan Cultivates Homegrown Success
A new Agriculture plan, Homegrown Success, will make Nova Scotia's agriculture industry more competitive, innovative and profitable. Focusing on creating business opportunities in high-value areas, innovation, building the Nova Scotia brand, connecting businesses with potential partners abroad and helping farmers generate greater profits from the marketplace. The plan
fulfills an important commitment for government and we all share the responsibility for making agriculture a profitable, competitive and self-reliant industry that will ensure our long-term prosperity.
- Premier Highlights New Directions in State of Province Address
In his State of the Province address on Nov. 24. Premier Darrell Dexter outlined new directions taken by the province in energy, job creation and managing the deficit as examples of the changes needed to ensure the province lives within its means and grows the economy. He made it clear that Nova Scotia must continue to change in order to address the serious challenges confronting the province and continue to protect important public services.
- Province's Clean Technology Industry Gets Boost
Nova Scotian clean technology companies will have better access to capital through a new, $24-million provincial fund. The fund will be administered by Innovacorp and is part of jobsHere, Nova Scotia’s plan to grow the economy. The investment will help companies meet an urgent demand for sustainable solutions. It will also attract new companies and investment into the region, strengthening Nova Scotia's position in this exciting global market.
