Nova Scotia Maintenance Enforcement Program

Changes to the Maintenance Enforcement Program

The Maintenance Enforcement Program helps ensure Nova Scotia families receive court-ordered child and spousal support payments. More than 16,000 Nova Scotians rely on this program.

We’re working to provide efficient, effective and consistent services for Nova Scotians and their families. Part of this is moving all enforcement services for the program to one location. The five regional MEP offices will close and a new office, serving the entire province, will open in Cape Breton. The corporate functions, including payment processing and enrollment, will remain in Halifax. Having staff and services in one central location will mean more consistent oversight, more opportunities for staff training, and new ways of providing client service.

This change is part of ongoing efforts by the government to improve the program, taking advantage of a trend toward greater use of the web and telephone services. The relocation of the offices is also part of a larger effort of government to do business outside of Halifax and make government jobs available in all parts of the province. Most provinces now provide maintenance enforcement services from one office.

The relocation will take place over the next year. For questions and answers about the relocation, click here (PDF) and you can read the full media release here.
