Statement by Premier MacLellan -- Swissair Crash

Premier's Office

Nova Scotians were shocked and saddened to awaken this morning to news of the tragic crash of Swissair Flight 111 in the waters off Peggy's Cove.

"On behalf of all Nova Scotians, I wish to extend our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the passengers and crew," said Premier Russell MacLellan. "The tragedy is almost incomprehensible. The grief you carry today must be unbearable. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this time."

Premier MacLellan expressed admiration and gratitude to the hundreds of Nova Scotians who came together in the dark hours of last night before hope was lost for survivors among the 229 aboard the Geneva-bound flight.

"I watched the faces of Nova Scotians on TV this morning --men who had rushed to the scene in hopes of rescue," he said. "What was obvious was their sense of frustration in not being able to do more; what was visible was their personal grief for the victims.

"But I want to say to them, and to the hundreds of other Nova Scotians who responded without hesitation when the call came in last night, you did your best. And I am sure those who lost family and friends know that."

The premier said Nova Scotia will spare no effort to extend support and sympathy to family and friends of the crash victims.

"This province will open its doors and its arms to those who lost loved ones, many of whom will be coming to Nova Scotia in the hours and days ahead."

Premier MacLellan has instructed the provincial government to provide whatever assistance family and friends require while in the province.
