Premier John Hamm to Step Aside

Six years after becoming premier, Nova Scotia's John Hamm announced today, Sept. 29, that he will step aside. Premier Hamm said his resignation will take effect once a successor is selected.

"I am more grateful than I can say for the wonderful people I've met, for the dedicated people I've been fortunate to work with, and for the terrific experiences I've had," the premier said today at Province House. "I have been very proud to have represented all Nova Scotians, on the national and international stage. I look forward to doing so for a while longer. It is an honour and a privilege that I will cherish forever."

Premier Hamm said he will lead the government in the House of Assembly when it opens on Oct. 13. "I will be there with the same enthusiasm and excitement I had when I first entered the legislature 12 years ago," he said. "I will be there with my colleagues to continue our work for a stronger, better and more prosperous Nova Scotia."

Premier Hamm was first elected as a member of the legislative assembly in 1993. He was elected premier in July 1999 and re-elected in August 2003.
