Program Helps Building Owners Invest in Energy Efficiency

The province is making it easier for apartment and other residential building owners in Nova Scotia to invest in energy efficiency.
Conserve Nova Scotia is investing $250,000 in a new program that gives owners of multi-unit residential buildings rebates for installing energy-efficient products in their buildings. The maximum rebate that an individual building owner can receive is $10,000.
"This program will help building owners provincewide save energy and money during a time of high home energy costs," said Richard Hurlburt, Minister responsible for Conserve Nova Scotia. "They will benefit from immediate energy savings with these energy-efficient products and our environment will benefit from reduced emissions."
Twenty products qualify for rebates, including energy-efficient lighting, ENERGY STAR qualified front-load washing machines, and various water conservation devices.
Energy-efficient lighting can reduce electricity use by as much as 75 per cent. ENERGY STAR qualified front-load washing machines can reduce energy use by more than 40 per cent and water use by as much as 50 per cent, compared with conventional washers.
Water conservation devices can also help cut energy bills. A single low-flow shower head can save up to $50 a year, based on one five-minute shower every day.
Conserve Nova Scotia is partnering with the Investment Property Owners Association of Nova Scotia, which will administer the program on the province's behalf.
"We are pleased to partner with Conserve Nova Scotia to offer this program to our members and all apartment building owners and condominium corporations throughout the province," said the association's executive director Rex MacLaine.
To qualify for rebates, landlords must receive advance approval of their proposed upgrades from the association. Then products may be purchased and installed. Rebate cheques will be sent to building owners once the proof of purchase is received.
