Nova Scotia Seeks Bids for Coal Gas Exploration

Oil and gas companies have a new opportunity to join the province's growing energy sector.

The Department of Energy has issued a request for proposals for coal gas exploration in the Cape Breton region. Competitive bids on the 64,422-hectare Tomkinsville land parcel are being solicited after a nomination by industry.

"It's great to see onshore exploration interest continues to grow," said Energy Minister Bill Estabrooks. "Much of Nova Scotia's onshore energy resource is still unknown, but it's clear we have enormous potential."

Coal gas exploration agreements are five-year terms, with one five-year renewal option. The province has three coal gas agreements on land in the Stellarton, Springhill and Sydney Basin areas.

A package for the land parcel, which includes geological and geophysical data and descriptions of exclusion areas, is available from the Department of Energy by calling 902-424-8114.

Proposals for exploration on the Tomkinsville land parcel will be accepted until July 14 at 4 p.m.
