Henry Holt and Company, New York, published The Mountain and the Valley in 1952. R.M. Powers designed the dust-jacket. ''About Ernest Buckler'' is on back of dust-jacket.

Ernest Buckler died on 4 March 1984. The Chronicle-Herald, 8 March 1984, p. 1-E, quoted literary giant Margaret Laurence who said Buckler's The Mountain and the Valley ''may have been the best novel written in this century, and the best novel written anywhere in the last 50 years.'' (MG 1, vol. 2517, no. 2033)
